[not a poem just bad prose]
Tell me why you spend money you don't have
on a cup of coffee you could get next door for free.
Tell me why you sit in a chair when you prefer couches
reading so casually a book when I know
your life reverted to the screen so long ago.

I suppose it's fine for those who haven't met you -
girl in chair drinking coffee reading book -
but I know better. I know the hours spent by the real you
next door, drinking free coffee, sitting on a couch,
reading from a screen.

So what demon has wiggled his way in your head,
dictating you pretend to look normal in this crowded place
(don't you despise crowds?)

Midknitting Skittering like kaleidospecks
She told us, they flee observation
That those memories warptwistfallbreak
, little by little
, upon each recollection.

So with all the heartbreak
A soldier's mother swallows
I grit my teeth and fill the box:
Last summer
, our first kisses
, the sun and the sea
This summer
, glacial embraces
, mountains and waves

I look back and pull, dusty,
Bloody memories from the back:
That spring
, blue sheets and skies
, warm smells and notes
First spring
, the girl at the park
, phonecalls in the dark

She said each thought alters
With every indulgent memory

It's easy to be there for you when I've no place to go
Hitching to the other coast a penny below broke
Steering nighttime travel tales in a streetlamp's smoke

Failing every task while inventing the bizarre
I get lost in the woods but I'll take us to the stars
Careening onto bridges over a scissortoothed sea
Her jaws unhinging rusty notes to Canon in D

You called in the night like a boiling egg
Bubbling over with some favors to beg
I couldn't stand to see your soul bursting out the cracks
So it's three A.M. and here I am racing on the tracks

I wanted to thank the skilled ~dashinvaine for his work on turning my poem "Lovers" into a beautiful visual poem for use as a wedding gift.

I strongly encourage you to check him out; his pieces largely reside in the medieval period and remind me of the fantasy stories I devoured when I was younger.

In other news, holy earthquake Alaska! Thank goodness it was too deep to do much immediate damage, but you guys be careful up there.
